walks and countryside

There are some great walks in the area, with the Old Railway Line and the Staffordshire Way right on your doorstep.

A little further afield are the banks of the River Dove at Ellastone, the Tissington Trail starting at Ashbourne, and the Roaches at Leek.

Don’t forget to explore Georgian Buxton and its wonderful Theatre, and Leek outdoor market, and every month there’s a maker’s market in Uttoxeter.

eat and drink

We are spoilt for choice with local delicacies. As well as nationally-famous Denstone Hall Farm, there’s also the Hartington Cheese Shop and the farm shop at Staffordshire Meats.

For pubs, The Tavern in Denstone village is 5 minutes’ walk away, and The Black Lion at Consall Forge is a great place to eat lunch outside and watch steam trains.

A pleasant stroll or a short drive, is also the village of Alton, with good eating options too.

days out

Sudbury Hall, Calke Abbey, Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are all close by, as well as the National Space Centre at Leicester and Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope.

The art galleries and museums in Manchester and Birmingham are less than an hour away. Visit the Potteries and learn about the remarkable Wedgewood family and stock up on the latest Emma Bridgewater.

For something a bit different, try the Red Carpet Independent Cinema at Barton Marina!

Just down the road is also Alton Towers, the best theme park in the country with thrill seeking rides and beautiful gardens.

peak district

The Peak District is just a short drive away. Voted the fourth best National Park in the world, it has so much to offer.

For walking, there’s the beautiful Dales (Beresford Dale, Wolfscote Dale, Biggin Dale, Dovedale etc). Hire a bike and cycle the famous Tissington Trail or the popular Manifold Valley Trail and High Peak Trail.

There’s also an abundance of National Trust properties, stately homes and English Heritage properties (including Haddon Hall, Chatsworth, Sudbury etc).

Due to the varied landscape of the Peak District, the local area has a diverse range of activities other than walking and cycling, which include climbing, caving, watersports, hangliding, mountain biking etc.

local towns and villages

As well as Denstone, the lovely villages of Alton and Ellastone are close by, and a little further afield you can explore Ilam, Hartington and Tissington.

The Georgian towns of Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne are also well worth visiting.

The market town of Uttoxeter and it’s famous race course is only 10 minutes drive away.

outdoor activities

If you’re feeling active, there’s a lot to do here. There’s the nationally-rated mountain bike trails at Cannock Chase, gliding at Darley Moor, watersports at Carsington Water, and clay pigeon shooting at Doveridge.

Head up into the Peak District along the quiet lanes if you enjoy challenging but beautiful bike rides. Or bring mountain bikes and explore the many local trails.
